Abstract

In this paper we discuss the role and potential of civic participation in public and community art projects, building upon our own participation as volunteers in the project “Planisfério da Interculturalidade”, which took place in Monte da Caparica (Almada, Portugal) between 2013 and 2015. We confront the processes, methodologies and values adopted in this project with the literature on public art to defend that a workable notion of participation in public art implies a displacement of the notion of authorship to one of co-creation, and that the places and opportunities for participation in the common building of public space should be multiplied.

Keywords: Planisfério da Interculturalidade (Almada, Portugal); public art; civic participation; learning community.
